Shortly after the opening of the original phase of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Mr. Packard commissioned Robin Burnett and GTD to study the possibilities for the then, future wing on the open ocean.

Mr. Burnett and GTD, researched the current technology and special effects at that time. They then developed several exhibition design directions to introduce the visitors to the submarine canyon in the bay. One proposal was to create a "motion-ride" sub cruise to the bottom, including a special effects encounter between a Sperm Whale and a Giant Squid. Also different ways to exhibit the canyon, included film projections and special effects, descending walks, tanks, models, etc.
